chocpretz4me's Full Review: Lite On LVW-5005 DVD Recorder
I bought this unit in November 2004 in order to copy cassettes to CD's and home video from VCR tapes to DVDs. It was temperamental and the instruction manual was poorly written, but I learned to work with it until last week when it abruptly stopped accepting DVD disks on the 'allowed' list. It exhibited the same behavior other reviewers mentioned... the disk won't play and just spins uselessly in the drive. Then the recorder refuses to EJECT it until you fiddle with power off/on/EJECT repeatedly.
At the advice of customer service, I switched to a different DVD brand on the 'allowed' list, and those don't work either. I also downloaded the latest software update from the website, but no dice. I contacted customer service who suggested I try yet a 3rd brand of disk off the list.
All that is irrelevant, though, because I currently have 6 DVDs of home video that are still 'open' (not Finalized in Lite-On's proprietary format), and since I can't get my recorder to recognize them, ALL THAT HOME VIDEO IS LOST. Customer service suggested I offload the video to my computer, but I found that my PC doesn't recognize Lite-On's format. Customer service advised me to find someone else with a Lite-On unit and borrow theirs to finalize my video. I doubt there are any volunteers.
