A good, solid servlet and JSP engine
Written: Oct 30 '99
Pros:Easy to use, inexpensive, good support
Cons:Not for use with high loads, no dynamic class re-loading
I've run JRun for over a year and a half now and compared to competing products in this price range like IBM WebSphere Standard Edition and JServ (now Tomcat) this is the product to use. Administration and configuration settings can be easily and quickly reached through a desktop applet and the log files are easy to find and understand. JServ integrates well with Microsoft's IIS web server and can be used with Apache and pretty much any other major web server platform.
The only downside that I encountered is when updating servlets, JRun often won't start running your new code until you've re-started your web server. A minor complaint, since WebSphere and other app servers claim to allow on-the-fly updates, but don't always work as advertised.
I would be hesitant to recommend JRun for use in a high-volume, heavy processing environment, since other higher priced app servers like Web Logic and Sapphire Web are probably better suited for the task, however, for use as a desktop testing application or for a light to medium load web server, this is the way to go.
