| RobinLynn's Full Review: Magellan 750 NAV Car GPS Receiver |
As my husband and I explored the beauty of the New England autumn, we were able to truly relax and enjoy ourselves, feeling confident that we would get to our final destination at the end of the day without the usual frustrating wrong turns, missed road signs, and confusion. Whenever we go on vacation where much driving is involved, my husband is always the designated driver and I am, in theory the navigator. The only problem is this navigator has difficulty reading maps, has a rather poor sense of direction, and my distance vision, even with help,is only pretty good.
But thanks to the Hertz NeverLost Navigation system in our rental car, we never got lost. The NeverLost unit, which sits right on the dashboard, between driver and passenger identifies exactly where you are at any time, and shows and tells you how to get to wherever you are going. It uses the Global Position System (GPS), which uses sensors linked to a satellite system to achieve the accuracy needed for true turn-by-turn guidance. It is the newest and most advanced on-board system ever engineered by Magellan, a leading manufacturer in satellite navigation technology
You select your destination from a pre-programmed list of points of interest, or by entering a specific street address, intersection, or a highway entrance or exit. NeverLost guides you, telling you when you need to get into an exit lane before you need to turn or when you need to watch for a turn on a smaller road. Every part of your trip, it lets you know how much further you have until your next turn and how much further until your final destination. The screen on the unit displays clear, easy to understand visual directions as well, showing you the road you are on and the exact location of your next turn. It displays the actual road layout under 3-D directional arrows. The friendly voice prompts you when to actually turn, and a bell, sounding much like a doorbell, rings as you are turning. If you miss a turn, or head in the wrong direction, it immediately prompts you that you need to get back on the designated route. That sometimes gets to be annoying, when you are detouring for a beautiful view, or to stop and get something to eat, but it’s a small inconvenience.
NeverLost uses a series of large digital street maps that, in addition to showing major highways, show city streets for medium and large cities. Also included are thousands of points of interest, including hotels, restaurants, and some of the tiny towns that we discovered in New England. When we were on some of the really tiny, backwoods or mountain roads, especially the winding ones, the navigator got confused somewhat, and gave us wrong directions. We don’t know if it was just our unit that couldn’t keep up with all the curves and turns, or the directions from the satellite system above. Either way, we still kept our trusty map handy!!
NeverLost speaks English, Dutch, French German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish. The color display is a super-bright, high resolution screen, so it is always easy to read, even in full sunlight. The touch controls are easy and comfortable to use.
Arriving back in Boston to return the car was a bit of a concern to us. We don’t know the streets in Boston, and driving there can be frustrating even if you know where you are going. Of course, all the road construction in the middle of the city only aggravates the problem. But we just programmed the navigator to the correct address and it took us effortlessly, turn- by –turn, back to the Hertz dealership. What a pleasure!
As of the time we made our reservations, Hertz was the only car rental company that featured this system, and is the main reason we chose Hertz. Now if only they would start putting them in their European fleet!
