| dkarmol's Full Review: Magellan 750 NAV Car GPS Receiver |
We rented a Lincoln Town Car for our trip to Vermont, and ordered one with the NeverLost Navigation System- made by Magellan. It was great when we followed the main roads, and when we new the precise address where we wanted to go. But it had some major failures, too. While it may be true that we were "never lost," we certainly drove out of our way several times, in reliance on the Never Lost directions.
Here are a couple of examples. On I-81, before we reached Harrisburg, PA, there was a major accident. All traffic was diverted off the highway. We stopped for gas, and decided to use the navigation system, to find us a better route to Harrisburg, our next point of destination. We programmed the destination, and began to follow the directions. The system took us right up to the edge of a river, where the sign said "Ferry operates only May- September". Can you believe it- the "never lost" system took us to a ferry boat landing, where there was no ferry, no bridge, just a wide expanse of river!! We had to enter our destination again, and choose other than "shortest route" in order for the system to tell us how to get there without driving across the water! This is a serious failure, in my opinion.
Another failure was the fact that the system was unaware of certain roads, and would demand that you "return to route" in its pleasant female voice whenever you turned on to a road that was not in its database.
Finally, when you are taking major roads, it is incredible to me that you cannot enter your final destination in the system, and have the navigation system tell you each major road to take to get there. Oddly, you can only program a few hundred miles, or within a state. You must, therefore, continually reset your destination, in order to use the system. This is a hassle, and definitely not something you can do while driving. You really need a co-pilot to do this, for the system to work effectively.
I cannot recommend this unit, and certainly wouldn't buy one, until some of these flaws are fixed.
