We rented a Volvo S80 from Hertz with their NeverLost GPS
system from LAX. I really liked the accuracy and voice
prompts that it gave. After an initial learning phase I be-
came so confident with the device that I didn't use a map.
My criticisms of the system was that it would take a few
minutes from activation to "acquire the satellite signals".
As a result we would be driving some distance not knowing if
we were proceeding in the right direction. Secondly if one
were to approach two forks off of the one road the GPS prompt may not be clear and we would take the wrong fork. On
the plus side the system would give you positive feedback
with double tones to let you know that you were proceeding
on the right course. Also as you approach a turn or exit
the display will change to a large scale map of the roads
showing exactly the type of turn (i.e. right angle, hairpin,
gradual, etc.)with a large arrow. The pertinent street name
is also shown in large type. We enjoyed our driving around
Southern California much more without the extra stress of
trying to read maps, particularly at night, and getting lost. No need to turn into a gas station!!!!
