After discovering that Malibu Coconut flavored rum is far too sweet for my liking, I should have known better than to try their Pineapple version. But of course, I love pineapple as much as I do coconut, and a taste of the tropics seemed to be just what the doctor ordered in the middle of January, albeit a warmer one than usual.
Mixing rum with pineapple juice is popular in the Caribbean, and Im surprised somebody didnt think of a pineapple rum sooner. Oddly enough, its made in Canada, or so the bottle says.
This might be a great little rum for mixing, except that the pineapple flavor seems to get lost in cola. You might have better results with club soda, but Malibu Pineapple Rum is easy enough to drink straight or on the rocks. At 40 proof (20% alcohol by volume), its not all that potent.
At about $15 for a fifth size bottle, this isnt all that expensive. Luckily I only bought a nip bottle, since Im not fond of overly sweet liquers. I suspected this one might be on the cloying side, and I was right. If you enjoy sweet fruit juice, you might just love Malibu Pineapple Rum.
As soon as you decant a little into a glass, you get a rush of fruit aromas. Its just like popping the top off of a cap of Dole Pineapple juice. The pineapple flavors are concentrated and potent, almost overpowering. If you really like pineapple, that could be a good thing.
Once you sip, theres that pineapple flavor dominating everything again, and then a sickly sweetness that was too much for my taste. I was reminded of pineapple lifesavers, and theres hint of an unpleasant metallic flavor too.
This finishes like pineapple jucie, with some alcohol warmth and, finally, just a bit of rum flavor starting to emerge. And thats one of the problems with Malibu Pineapple Rum, it really doesnt taste a lot like rum. Its more like pineapple juice with vodka. Cheap vodka at that.
I wouldnt buy it again myself, though if you have a sweet tooth the size of Nebraska you might enjoy it.
