Malibu Coconut Rum: It Makes Most Drinks Smooth and Sweet

Written: May 27 '07 (Updated Jan 07 '08)
Pros:Mixes well with fruit juices for those who like sweet drinks.
Cons:Too sweet
The Bottom Line: This is a good rum to have on the bar during a fun-in-the-sun party. It may not be for me, but others like it.

I happen to like a sweet rum. Myers to be exact. My wife and I drink it almost exclusively, whenever it's available.

There are times however when I have to go with something else. Yesterday was one of those times. In celebrating a special day in our family we all moved on to a state park to enjoy our day. Please don't alert the authorities we has alcohol at our site.

Not My Usual Choice

We were drinking responsibly however the host and hostess did not prepare responsibly. No Myers rum!! Beer was also brought but was not on ice. I would have to wait a little bit before consuming any alcohol. I did however spy Malibu Coconut Flavored Rum, a rum we have had on a number of occasions, especially when in the Caribbean with mixed results.

Beggars can't be choosy and after a bottle of warm beer I decided to try the stuff again.

The Pour and the Taste

I poured a small bit of Malibu Coconut Rum in a glass. Unlike Myers that is a dark rum, this one is clear. It is poured out of a handsome looking white bottle with a Tropical theme logo. A bar in the Caribbean looks proper with it on a shelf and it's not a bad choice to be carrying under the arm when invited to a fun-in-the-sun party.

When I tasted the stuff I found it was overwhelmingly saturated with a very sweet coconut taste.
The coconut was there and strong but it's still NOT the real deal coconut flavour. The feel is smooth, almost oily with both vanilla and a nutty taste coming through, not much rum taste at all. It finishes with that same oily vanilla feel. I went to make a mix.

I added it to a coke and tasted it. After knowing Myers and Coke so well, I was disappointed. Though the coconut taste was there it was too sweet with the coke. Again, no rum taste at all.

A New Favorite

A bit later in the day, after the beer I was drinking finished up, I decided to try the Malibu again. This time I mixed it with lemon-lime Gatorade. Man! That was perfect for me at that moment. Though Gatorade can have its own sweetness factor, the mix of the coconut flavor along with the lemon-lime of the Gatorade was excellent. I will try it again some day.

I wonder if the name Malade would go over well, perhaps not.

I suppose even if it is not named such, Malibu Coconut Flavored Rum is still a very popular alcohol that is mixed in many tropical recipes.

Though I'm not usually particularly fond of the drink, it does seem to be the life of the party for so many people I know.

Tommy Bahama Golden Sun Rum Another Babados rum product that I like.
