| stan6576's Full Review: Maytag M6X06F2A Thru-Wall/Window Air Conditioner |
I have central air but living alone I felt it was wasteful to cool the whole house at night. So I decided to put a window unit in the master bedroom. Home Depot had a Maytag 6000 BTU unit for $129. With a quality name like Maytag and a five year on site parts and labor warranty it seemed like a really good buy.
The unit is very attractive and has an electronic digital thermostat that can be set in increments of 1 degree from 66 to 88 degrees. It also has a full function remote control which is very handy when in bed. The control panel can also be set to turn the a/c on or off in a set number of hours. This might be handy if you wanted to start the a/c before returning from work each day but it would need to be reset each day. I was disappointed the unit doesn't have provisions for fresh air intake.
My experience with the Maytag has been disappointing. The first unit I bought vibrated a lot even with just the fan running. The unit failed on the second day when the electronic control panel developed a mind of its own and kept switching between Cool and Fan every couple of minutes. I returned the a/c and exchanged it for another one.
The fan in the second one ran smooth and quiet, but the compressor is noisy and vibrates excessively. I am always having to hit, tape or put wedges around the plastic front or filter to keep it from resonating. I live in Florida with very high humidity so enough condensation builds up in the a/c for the condenser fan blades to splash it around which makes even more noise. Bottom line, I would not recommend this a/c.
