When I moved into my first home, I was without central air conditioner. I wasnt too concerned about this because the Philadelphia weather isnt so bad compared to Florida weather. I thought I would make it with no problem because I had two window AC units. When I moved in the previous owner left one unit, an Emerson Quietkool Air Conditioner unit in the dining room, and it was sufficient enough to cool the whole downstairs. Since she had taken the upstairs unit, I decided to purchase a new unit as it could get pretty hot up there during the summer.
At first I didnt need to use the unit because I was comfortable with the windows open and the fans going. When summer came and I finally had to shut out the heat and turn on the AC, I discovered that it wasnt a bad unit at all. But it definitely wasnt perfect.
This 6,000 BTU window unit has a width of 18 5/8 and a height of 12 ¼
this unit is heavy and takes two people to secure it into the window safely. I think it would be virtually impossible for one woman (and Im not a wimp) to get it set into the window by herself without the thing falling. This unit will fit windows up to minimum 19 and maximum 36 wide, with a height of 12 ¾ minimum. This white Maytag unit is designed to cool approximately 200 square feet of space. I have to say that this actually exceeded my expectations. My master bedroom was much larger than 200 square feet and I never had a problem with cooling the whole area.
Installation is very easy. My brother and father were both available when I purchased this unit so they had it in the window within ten minutes. Because I was using the same window that the previous owner had used for her unit, there were wood braces already located on the window. So all they did was put the unit in the window and secure the top and bottom with screws. The expandable sides pull out and also hook to the side of the window if the unit is too large to cover the whole area.
The Maytag Air Conditioner has electronic digital controls. There is a small remote control that controls every feature of the unit. The small function section is located on the top left of the unit. Like some air conditioner (ex. My downstairs unit), this unit has no cover over the control buttons. This didnt bother me because they werent unattractive knobs, but small press buttons instead. Meaning that the display not ugly, but attractive enough to display as it was digital.
There is a small red light and small temperature screen at the top of the function pad. When in use, the numbers on the temperature screen will glow green. Below this is a timer with up/down buttons next to it to adjust the temperature. This Maytag Air Conditioner has 2 cool speeds and 2 fan speeds. The fan button controls the auto feature or whether you want to leave it on high or low. The button below that, controls whether you want the fan running or the cooling function. Last, but not least, is your on/off button located on the bottom.
The air grill is located at the very top of the unit. You can also switch the direction of the air from side to side by a small lever. Its terrible that there is no up/down adjustment. There is a small slide-out air filter located right below this grill. The filter slides out very easily and can be washed before being slid easily back in again. Its a simple process that anyone can do.

One this that I loved about this unit is that it could be controlled by an included remote. Its easy to use because I dont have to get up, turn on the light and walk over to the unit to change its function. There were many times that I awoke and just reached over to the nightstand to grab the remote and changed the temperature without even getting out of bed. What a relief! I hate getting out of bed in the middle of the night.
Leaving this unit in the on position all night does not mean that it will run that way all night. The unit does go into fan mode when the room reaches your desired set temperature. This is a good feature because I can set it at a comfortable temperature and not worry about waking up freezing/hot in the middle of the night.
Another thing that I liked was the fact that this unit had a 1-degree temperature adjustor. If I was just a tad bit cold, I dont have to turn it the unit up five degrees and get hot ten minutes later, I can change the temperature by mere degrees. There is also a 24-hour on/off timer, which comes in handy if you forget to leave it on or want it to come on every so often.
The only problem that I have with this unit is that it is very loud. When this unit kicks on, I always heard it downstairs. Maybe Im just not used to window units because I have always had central AC, but this unit just seems very loud to me. My downstairs unit was pretty loud also but thats because it was many years old. I expected it from that one but not my new Maytag. I have been in contact with other window units throughout the years and have to say that some of them were not as loud.
I purchased this unit on sale at Home Depot for $99
a great deal in my opinion as I have yet to see it at that price again. I never had to use Maytag so cannot comment on their service. I never experienced any problems with the functioning of this air conditioner. This unit comes with a 5-year parts and labor warranty.
Overall, this is a great unit that is very easy to operate with the function panel or remote control. It works really well to cool the specified area (and even more if left on long enough) in a pretty short amount of time, but it is extremely loud. If I had the chance again, I doubt I would have purchased this unit if I knew it was that loud unless I absolutely had no choice. Another thing I have to point out is that I did end up getting used to it somewhat. I was able to fall asleep with the thing running but it usually woke me up in the middle of the night when the unit kicked on. But I suspect that some people might not be able to get used to it.
