Pros: cheap, made by reputable manufacturer, removes humidity well.
Cons: somewhat weak, a little noisy and doesn't move enough air.
The Bottom Line: not the best, not the worst. a decent AC for the price, but there's better.

| bikehorn's Full Review: Maytag M6X06F2A Thru-Wall/Window Air Conditioner |
I bought this thing for my cottage at home depot for $188 canadian. seemed like a good buy. This thing, like all Maytag air conditioners, is not actually made by Maytag - instead, they are contracted to Fedders North America...a major manufacturer of HVAc equipment if you didn't know. in fact, the Maytag logo on the plastic front panel is just a cheap silkscreen, and a little crooked too. on the back of the chassis, it's just a crookedly-attached sticker. I noticed, however, that all Maytag air conditioners seem to cost less than the equivalent Fedders-branded units.
Anyway, i installed this unit not quite as they intended in that i simply remove a small horizontal window and shoved the AC in there nailed and caulked in some plywood and angled it correctly for the condensation. It isn't coming out any time soon, but it is mounted solidly and is just as effective as, say, shoving it into a regular old window.
When I turned it on, I first noticed there wasn't much cool air, but that seemed logical since it was the first time it was powered up. after, say 20 minutes it began working as i thought it would. it was a little noisy though, kind of vibrationy, especially the front panel. pressing it in from different angles stopped that, but you still have to do it every so often. I have no problem falling asleep with the amount of noise it makes, it's not a jackhammer or anything but the compressor is definitely not the quietest. Note that your mileage may vary because i am a somewhat heavy sleeper.
Also, i found it to be rather weak. the room is the right size for a 6000 BTU air conditioner, but it takes a long damn time to get down to say, 23 celsius if it's 30 or so outside. the good thing is, since it takes a while to cool off, it has a long time to dehumidify the air, and that's something it does well. even if it hasn't reached temperature yet, it's still comfortable because it's dry and still somewhat cooler than outside.
the remote was fine. it did what it was intended to.
