  • Durability:
  • Ease of Cleaning:
Pros:Dependable
Cons:Controls on back a hindrance when WE pile clothes on top of the machine
The Bottom Line: All in all I like the machine because it is heavy duty, dependable, has 6-cycles for assorted clothes, and was ready for use when my "newer" dryer" took a break.

Quick update January 2008. I spent $200 using a repair service that Maytag suggested in our area. The guy has been to our home three times over two months and the dryer still does not shut off via the dry sensor OR the timer!!

We just purchased a GE Dryer and hope to do better by them.

end update

We have two dryers in our home. One in the laundry room and another in a room my wife uses for ironing. It was a new set of Maytag Washer and Dryer that went into the laundry room when we made a few more room changes in our home.

Features and Benefits

I have had this dryer for perhaps six or seven years. I'm not sure if the exact dryer is still available but I do know the many of its features are. In looking at the picture above you may note the door is angled into the top of the dryer. This is helpful... and at times because of our habits, a hindrance. It does make it easier to put clothes in the dryer. It makes it easier still if the wet clothes are on top of the machine at that moment. They can almost slide down the front and be pushed into the machine.

Our problem is that many times we have unfolded dry clothes on top of the dryer. When we go to close the machine something may be hanging down, because of the shape of the door it doesn't take much, and keep the door from closing.

This machine has a moister sensor. Set the dryer to More dry or Less dry and the clothes are prepared to your satisfaction. It didn't take long to figure out where this adjustable setting works best for different type clothes. The book does give some helpful hints.

This also has a Cool Down feature that helps keep clothes from wrinkling quite as much. This is particularly useful with Permanent Press items.

My wife has a "Hands off" policy for drying some of her personal items. She doesn't trust me to properly use the more delicate setting for shrinkables and delicates. Believe me, even this guy who splits wood for his fireplace (what a man) can figure it out. I have learned though, no matter how big and strong I am, to "Obey my wife!"

This is a heavy duty capacity dryer that will take my "manly loads of clothes". The belt has never worn or needed replacement , a common problem for wet loads that are too heavy.

A Few Other Things

I can't hear the shut of ring when the dryer is finished but I don't have good hearing anyway. The internal light at least lets me know that the disappearing socks trick these appliances do is done in good order. It's like the magician saying, "Shazzaam! the sock is gone, and look, nothing under these sleeves". It's true, I look into the drum with the good light provided and indeed, the sock is gone! It's quite amazing this machine like the old school machines has continued that trick from older generations of dryers to the newer generation of dryer. Dependable I say.

I'll also mention that this machine has its controls on the front of a back sloping panel. This is a problem as we continue to let our dry clothes built up on the dryer. We just can't reach them. Again this is our personal bad habit but...there are machines in the Maytag line that have controls on the front of the machine itself. I may look for that next time. I don't see us changing old habits soon.

All in all I like the machine because it is heavy duty, dependable, is adjustable for many different clothes with an assortment of 6 cycles, and was ready for use when my "newer" dryer" took a break.
