jrw14493's Full Review: Memorex MMP8500 (128 MB) MP3 Player
I decided that carrying around a bulky CD player that skipped when I moved it was getting old. So I decided to look into buying a new mp3 player.
Not only did I look at price, but I looked at features. I wanted a small, highly portable, mp3 player with a AM/FM tuner built in. I did all kinds of research and decided on the Memorex MMP8500 128 MB MP3 Player. It looked sleek with its black on silver styling and the blue backlight.
After 6 months of waiting, It finally went on sale at Target for the low price of $84. I figured that Id give it a chance and If I didnt like it, I would take it back. So off to Target I went.
I came home and took it out of the package. I couldnt believe how small it was. It could fit literally in the palm of my hand. Also, the black rubberized housing was a plus for a firm grip.
The player came with a battery which was nice since some things dont. I put the battery in and took the cable out and headed to my computer. I plugged the cable into the mp3 player then into the USB port on the computer and turned the player on. It automatically came up with an add hardware wizard and I ran that and everything was all installed and ready to go. So now when I connect it, it comes up with a removable disk icon in the My Computer folder and I just click and drag files to that folder and it copies them to my mp3 player.
The player uses USB 1.1 so its not to fast. One thing I notice is that the song that I copy to my mp3 player the name of the song is in a different format that on my computer like there will be slashes in the name. Its kinda weird but it doesnt affect how the song is played.
The ear buds are downright uncomfortable and I went out right away and purchased some Sony headphones that are much more comfortable on the ear.
The sound that this thing produces is pretty good but If you are looking for great excellent awesome Bose-like award winning sound, look elsewhere.
The battery life is alright -- about 5 hours total over a 1 week period.
On the front of the player you have a Mode button and a EQ/REPEAT button. The mode button allows you to chose between playing mp3s, listening to the FM not AM, just FM tuner or using the built-in stopwatch. The EQ part is a bscis equalizer that does nothing but distorts the sound of the music to Rock, Classical, Pop, Jazz etc.. The repeat part allows you to repeat one song once, one song over and over and over, the whole player once or the whole player over and over and over. It is hard to get the EQ/REPEAT button to do one thing or the other.
On the top of the player you have a volume control, headphone jack, power button and a toggle switch, which is your main control. Also on the side you have a hold button which when engaged doesnt allow any buttons to be pressed. Also, the USB port is on the side.
On the back, there is a loop that allows the mp3 player to be attached to a supplied arm band.
With this mp3 player, you get earbuds, wristband, battery, manual and vinyl cover (which I dont like because the mp3 player doesnt fit into it properly.)
All in all, its an alright player, however now it has started to do something new. It freezes and emits a loud screaming noise through the headphones. Also when I drop it, It shuts off and a line shows up on the display. Maybe its because I dropped it ..
It's alright but someone could do better........
