colz85's Full Review: Memorex MMP8500 (128 MB) MP3 Player
It was time to replace the cassette walkman that had served me well for lo these many years. I thought I'd make the leap into mp3 land. One thing though....I needed a player with an FM tuner. I'm the Operations Manager at our radio station, and I need to be able to monitor our stations, yes, even at the gym or on the bike trail.
One day I was in Target and found the Memorex MMP8500. Small. Affordable. FM tuner. AND a card slot, so I wouldn't be limited just to what I could put on the unit's internal hard drive.
Bought it, got home, and set it up. The file transfer utility is simple to use. The unit itself, however, not so much. Remember, I am a radio tech geek. And I find nothing intuitive about the features on this sucker. I still can't tell you how to program radio stations. In theory, it has a lot of nice features for the price. Different EQ settings. Radio presets. But I find response to be slow, whether I'm skipping the Eminem cut on my mp3 card, or looking for another radio station. And this sucker eats batteries. I keep spare batteries in my gym bag, because I seem to always be changing them. (Unit takes one AAA battery)
Overall, the unit is lightweight, affordable, and does the job. I don't use the earbuds that came with it (does ANYONE find those things comfortable?). But overall, I'm kind of "meh" about it. It's not easy to use...one day I'm going to go flying off the treadmill because I'm caught up in fiddling with my mp3 player.
