I recommend the Sandisk Sansa Clip. It's small, got a clip, about 40 dollars for 1GB, and is a total gym friendly player.

It got a high score on Cnet. :)

I find your e-pinion valid and helpful but also think many of the cons you say are not the fault of the unit but the fault of too much over-expected from you?
