collin_ong's Full Review: SanDisk ImageMate® SDDR-75-07 Card Reader
I purchased ImageMate Dual Reader for CF-SM #SDDR-75 at Staples for $30 minus $30 rebate. Can't beat that price!
The unit is about the size/shape of a mouse (although only about 75% the length of a typical mouse) with two slots on the front. The CompactFlash slot will take Type I or II, though I didn't try any microdrives (which are the only CF Type II storage devices that I know of) with this unit. The SmartMedia slot is directly above. Two indicator lights show which slots are filled, and another that the unit is powered up.
The bottom of the unit has a short USB cable on a convenient rotating connector, with a slot on the bottom plastic so you can rotate the cabel and tuck it away nicely. This is very convenient for taking the unit with you in a camera bag, since no cables are sticking out waiting to get messed up in the shuffling. The package also includes a USB extension cable in case you need the place the unit farther away from the USB port.
I plugged the unit into the extra USB port on the right side of my Apple keyboard and it is recognized by Mac OS X 10.1.5 without any driver installation, although a CD of drivers is included with Windows and Mac OS X (both 9 and10.1) drivers. However, I never tried any of the provided drivers because the unit was supported directly by Mac OS 10.1.5.
CF and SM cards show up on the desktop and in Finder windows. Mac OS X's ImageCapture recognizes card inserts and offers to download the pictures. Image download seems to be faster than the same CF card connected through the camera cable and another CF reader from SII that I have.
My only complaint is that the unit could be smaller. Tapping on the plastic case sounds like there is a lot of empty space.
Overall, it's a very nice package, performs quickly, installs easily and you definitely can't beat the price: free!
