| dkozin's Full Review: Olympus XD-Picture Card (16 MB) (200840) |
I have received the Olympus 16 Mb xD-Picture Card with the Olympus D-565 digital camera. The cards capacity is quite small and I wouldnt have purchased it has it not been included with the camera.
Construction
The card is compact and is sturdy. The black case with gold and while lettering looks good and the golden arrow shows the direction in which you have to insert the card into the camera or a card reader.
Capacity
The cards 16 Mb capacity is adequate if you plan on taking pictures for the Internet or email (e.g. your web site, eBay, etc.). Also, it is adequate if you are planning on taking only a few high-resolution pictures.
For example, the 4-Megapixel Olympus camera can store only 5 pictures in its full resolution/low compression JPEG mode (2280x1712 pixels, SHQ) on this card or 16 pictures at full resolution with higher compression (2280x1712 pixels, HQ).
Obviously, the card fits more at lower resolutions. It fits 76 frames at 1024x768 in SQ1 mode or 165 frames at 640x480 (SQ2). You mileage may vary the numbers shown are applicable to a specific Olympus camera with its specific resolutions, compression settings and using JPEG.
If you plan on using TIFF or RAW modes (provided your camera supports them), you will undoubtedly need a larger-capacity card.
Operation
I have not removed the card from the camera often, but used USB to transfer pictures to my computer. The card worked well and the images were stored pretty quickly. The card was adequate when I needed to take several pictures in the mountains (I took 15 pictures it 2280x1712 resolution using HQ mode) and also when I took a bunch of pictures at VGA resolution (640x480) for eBay listings.
Bottom Line
The 16 Mb xD-Picture card is adequate for taking a handful of high-resolution pictures and saving them as JPEG files or taking lower-resolution pictures. If you want the best quality and lower compression and plan on taking many pictures, get a card with larger capacity.
