Good review ... (Reply to this comment)
by theuerkorn
though I personally never liked the integration feature too much. Besides, the only software I am using from this pack is Word. But that's besides the point. Good thorough review, with focus on the target group: casual users.

Sounds like a good deal! (Reply to this comment)

I don't know how people operate without MSWORKS and MSWORD. They are both super programs.
I enjoyed reading this - you've given a wonderful rundown for folks to consider.
Thanks,
Lorace

Works vs Office (Reply to this comment)
by nad_masters
I, too, never liked Works, but only because of their weird file format. If Microsoft made Works as a Lite version of Office, which also uses the same file format by default (and able to view Office files without screwing up the formatting), then I say "excellent..."
But that has not been the case since Works and Office were created.

Thanks for the comment and good point. I'm sure this doesn't address most of your issues, but I should have mentioned that the Works spreadsheet will save spreadsheets in the Excel XLS format, and you can open Excel 2000 spreadsheets, sort of. If you open an excel spreadsheet with lots of different pages, you can only open one page into the Works spreadsheet. Likewise, there are many advanced excel features that aren't supported by Works spreadsheet. But if you want to create a straightforward 1 page spreadsheet, you can share between Excel and Works. Updating my review to reflect this point.

MSWorks vs. AppleWorks (Reply to this comment)
by lawman67
I think including Word in the bundle is the only redeeming feature of MS Works. AppleWorks (rns on both Mac and Windows) offers far more compatibility with MS Office files (Excel, Word and PowerPoint) than MS Works does, at an equally low price ($80 fll/$40 education).
Still, if a full version of Word is what you want, this is the absolute cheapest way to get it.

Works Suite is better described as a home productivity suite rather than an office suite. Works Suite includes several pieces of entry level (yet very effective) software, like encarta, streets and trips, that I've found have lots of redeeming features/value.
You can buy Works separately (but thats not the subject of this review). Runs about $45 and does not include Word. I think most home users would find Works Suite a much better value.
