Jesse29's Full Review: Mintek MDP-1720 7 in. Portable DVD Player
I've owned numerous DVD players both home and portable since they started making them. To some degree I've kind of gone out of my way to get the newest on the market and others that are not name brand just to try them out. I originally purchased this particular player off eBay for a cost of less than $100 and was told retail value is upwards of $250. Honestly, I've never checked that out so I don't know if I paid more than I should have.
Highlights
This player came with an 8" screen,
2 headphones,
Battery,
Remote Control,
Cables to run it through my television, and
Carrying case.
The 8" screen is a plus, however, the built in speakers I found to be weak. I was fortunate so in the location that I used this player I was able to hook up my computer speakers which indeed made the sound quality better.
Another note on the screen, this is a draw back of any portable DVD player that I've encountered to date is that if you are in an area where you are exposed to sunlight the glare is going to make viewing the movie very difficult.
The headphones also are a nice feature, but, this proved to be of little use to me as I was never in any area where I needed to control the sound that much.
The case that came standard with this particular model that I got had plenty of room to carry at least 8 DVD's and the player.
Drawbacks
Some of these have already been covered in the previous section, but I will highlight them individually.
- Speaker sound quality is poor
- Disks have a higher tendency to skip
- Glare is terrible in highly lit areas. (As with most Portable DVD players.)
- Has a high rate of frequency interference around other electronic devices. Especially two way radios.
On the frequency interference, this system in the same vicinity with a two way radio has a tendency to reset itself when someone keys up one of these radios.
Bottom Line
For the cost that I paid I don't feel that it was a waste of money. However, with that said, I will also say that in the future this is a name that I would not purchase again. While an 8" screen is nice, I will spend a little more money on a more reputable brand and enjoy a slightly better warranty which includes coverage of such interferences as two way radios.
