Well, it's finally here. I've waited for over a year to purchase this set. I've tested many widescreen TVs, and I felt this one was the one. After looking at many other brands like Hitachi, Pioneer, Sony, Panasonic and Philips, why Mitsubishi?
First of all, they have a great reputation for big screens. I know at least 5 big screen owners of Mitsubishi products from years ago. Not one of them have encountered any problems, and their sets still look great. Another thing is the competitors prices are just a bit too high. I believe a good HDTV widescreen should be priced anywhere from $2000-$4000, and not $5000-$10,000 for a similar sized set. Believe it or not I got this set for $2999. A great value for a great quality set.
Now for my experience with the WS-55805. The picture was incredible, it is a true digital TV. Especially at night, with all the lights off, my stereo in full surround, a nice comfy couch, snacks/refreshments, this was better than going to the movies all the way!
I hooked it up to my Sony DVD player and watched movies all day/night long. My DVD player is not a progressive scan player, and it still looked awesome! Also my DirecTV was very nice looking as well.
The only thing that I didn't like was the fact that it looked a little bit fuzzy at close range (5ft-7ft), although the regular joe wouldn't notice. I had to sit at least 10ft in my opinion to get a good picture. The best picture was from 12ft - 15ft, so a large living room is a plus for this one.
The IRIS feature is a beauty! In the daytime, turning the IRIS on gives you a brighter picture with great contrast, and at night turning it off looks even better. If you're the kind of person who stays up late watching T.V. and you eventually fall asleep, turn the IRIS on at night and it gives you a softer, not-that-bright comfortable picture that is easy on your eyes.
The sound was just right, not too overpowering, not too wimpy, just right! The built-in surround was a nice touch as well.
This HDTV is from Mitsubishi's Platinum WS Series. The Diamond version is the same thing, except a nice glossy black piano finish, the shiny triangle piece in the front, and the only extra feature of notice is that it focuses in High-Definition pictures in the center, as well as the four corners, whereas the Platinum focuses in the center. A difference that for me is not worth the extra $1000+. So finishing up the story, this is the set to get for those who aren't sure, and don't want to go over $5000.
