Monster Wireless FM Transmitter

Written: Dec 18 '05 (Updated Dec 18 '05)
Pros:Great signal, 8 stations, easy to use.
Cons:Short cable, Cost.
The Bottom Line: A great FM transmitter for your car.

This is an FM transmitter. It can be used on IPOD’s, portable dvd players, or any electronic device that has a 1/8 inch female plug. All you need is a FM radio.

How it works.
On one end is the 1/8 inch adapter that goes into the device making the sound. It transmits in stereo if the device is capable. On the opposite end is a cigarette lighter adapter that plugs in to a 12V cigarette lighter port. When the cigarette lighter adapter end is plugged in correctly a red light will glow. Because of this you do not need batteries.
In the middle is a controller with one red button. You press this button to cycle through the frequencies this unit broadcasts. The station that is on glows red.
Now just tune your car radio to one of the stations that is not broadcasting a signal and press play. That’s all there is to it.

My experiences and sound quality.
The speakers on my truck and car are both stock speakers. In addition I used it in conjunction with my Bose Wave Radio so I did not use high end equipment. But since most of us have stock speakers the review is very applicable for the average consumer.
I was very surprised to hear how clearly the sound came in. The stereo effects of the space ships were perfect and easily discernable. I was unable to hear any static or interference during my viewing of the movies. The only time I heard anything was when the DVD player was loading and that sound was a very minor hum you get from any FM station. It was nothing that concerned me. Overall I was pleased and give this part of it a 5 star rating. Since this is an FM transmitter I knew the quality wouldn’t be as good as a CD in my car stereo but it was as good as the best FM station I have listened to.
The sound is in stereo and easily noticeable in the vehicles. Just remember to set the DVD to stereo and not 5.1. 5.1 did not sound as good.

Problems
I had trouble while watching the Matrix in my car because the vocals were really quiet and the action was really loud. I had no way to adjust this other than controlling the volume button. Now this is normal for a home stereo but it was a little annoying in the car.
When I plug in this and the car adaptor for my Sony portable DVD player I get a slight and annoying hum.
The other problem is the cable is too short. It is barely long enough for my car for the back seat but if one of the side-back passengers wanted to put the dvd player on their lap, they couldn’t.

Stations available.
88.1, 88.3, 88.5, 88.7, 88.9, 89.1, 89.3, 89.5.

Ease of use.
Very easy to use. You plug in both ends, set the station on both the radio and this FM transmitter and you are ready to go. Anyone can use this product.

Who is this for?
This device is pretty much stuck to your car because of the cigarette lighter requirement. So if you wanted to use this inside your home then you are pretty much out of luck unless you are willing to make a rat pack or you want to buy an AC-to-DC converter. Radio shack has a pretty cheap one available.
Another problem to consider is that if you only have one cigarette adapter outlet in your car then you will need to get a splitter to run your portable DVD, or IPOD, and the FM transmitter at the same time.
If you have an IPod then I suggest getting the model with an IPod connector, not the 1/8 inch adapter.

What I like.
-Easy to use.
-Gold plated for better conductivity.
-Doesn’t need batteries.

What I don’t like.
-Some signal loss and minor static.
-Cable shorter than I would like, I’ll be using a 3 foot extension.
-You cycle through the channels, I’d rather have a selector for each channel.
-No option for batteries.
-I got a hum when this and my DVD player are both plugged into my car power ports.

About the rating.
I give it a 4.5 because it is a well-made electronics cable. The reason I dinged it half a point is because of how short the cord is. The cord barely reaches to the back of the front seats. In some cars you may have to buy a small extension cable. I also realize that the signal is not perfect but for an FM transmitter it really does the job. The only noise I hear is interference not related to the adapter.

Weight and dimensions
Length: 39 inches
Weight: 1.815 ounces
Diameter of cable: 1/8 inch

Summary
This is an FM transmitter. You plug it into any electronic device that has 1/8 inch adapter. The unit is powered by a cigarette lighter adapter. So far I have not had any interference and the signal is fairly strong. My only complaint is the short length of the cable. But if you’re in the market for one I highly recommend this model.

Other electronic reviews.
Sony Wega
Sony Portable DVD player
A cheap alternative to an IPOD
