| HyPeR's Full Review: Montezuma Gold Tequila |
Montezuma, the staple of college parties (At least the ones I attended). It is usually the cheapest tequila on the shelf in the store, running as low as $7 for a 750ml bottle.
If you are wanting tequila for a mixed drink, and solely because the recipe calls for tequila, you CAN use Montezuma, but if can afford the few extra dollars for a more expensive brand, I would DEFINITELY recommend it. It can mix, but you will not get the proper taste until you can also really taste the alcohol as well.
It tends to have a strong 'burnt' taste that many cheap tequilas lean towards, which especially makes it hard to take straight, at least until you have already had a few other drinks first.
Mix it with strong tasting mixers, such as sour, or put extra syrup in your margarita blender to cover up the taste. This is an alcohol to be used purely for alcohol's sake, with maybe a hint of taste to let you know what type it is.
Be warned about taking shots of this. It's taste can often make even drunk people gag, and I have seen more than one example of this go horribly wrong (myself included). Ever since I graduated college and was able to afford the few extra dollars, I have never bought Montezuma, even if it was the only tequila on the shelf - I'd rather decide upon a different drink for the night.
Overall, if it's all you can afford, or if you are planning on serving it to people who won't be sober enough to care, it's fine. But in general, shell out the couple of extra dollars and enjoy your alcohol more!
