| scilax01's Full Review: Abit Slot A KA7-100 Motherboard |
My current system is using the KA7-100 and has been incredibly stable considering it is using a CPU that it was not designed for. My system is using a rare Slot A 800mhz version of the newer Athlon Thunderbird CPU's. AMD released a limited number of these CPU's to OEM dealers but you can find them at some computer shows. Even though AMD and ABIT does not officially endorse using using a Slot A Thunderbird because the VIA KX-133 chipset does not support the newer Thunderbird Cache, but with a minor power adjustment in the BIOS it works fine. Go to http://www.apushardware.com/faqs/ka7faq/ka7faq.htm for information on how to do this.
My system configuration is as follows: Abit KA7-100, Slot A Thunderbird 800, 128MB Pc-133 SDRAM, 30gig Maxtor 7200rpm UDMA100 Hard Drive, 50x CD ROM, Creative Soud Blaster Live audio, 3dfx Voodoo3 3000 video, 3Com USR 56k VoiceFax Modem, LinkSys 10/100 Network adapter, Iomega zip drive (100)and ,of course, a floppy drive.
Since my pc also acts as my answering machine, it is kept on 24 hours a day 7 days a week and has not been turned off since it was built in August 2000. Since the boards also has UDMA-100 support, expect incredibly fast boots and file access when coupled with a UDMA 100 drive. I use the machine heavily for work and web publishing. It is very common for me to be using MS Front Page 2000, Adobe Photoshop, Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, ACDsee, MS Word, Napster, and listening to music using WinAmp all at the same time for hours without any system crashes.
If you are into overclocking your CPU, the KA7-100 gives you plenty of control through the BIOS. ABIT's jumperless easy bios always you to control core voltage and bus speeds within the BIOS. A very powerful feature for hardcore gamers that like to push their equipment to the max and beyond.
This motherboard is the best! ! ! I strongly recommend this motherboard if you want to build a quality system. If you don't want a reliable pc, choose something else.
