| Savage13's Full Review: Abit BP6 Motherboard |
Lets get real on this motherboard....is it for newbies, is it for pros only? Well it is for both. Abit has come up with a dual celeron system that is a no-brainer to install. I personally encountered no difficulties with installation of the Rev. 1.0 BP6 and was up within a few minutes after tightening the last case screw. Packed with my TNT2 card, 256MB RAM, NIC, Modem, CDRW, DVD, LS-120, Floppy and USB Webcam its definitely a full-boat. Despite only having a 200W power supply there were no power problems. I encountered no Windows 2000 installation problems either.
You may respond "then why so many others have problems?". One answer---overclocking! Sure its fun, and Abit freely gives you all the tools to overclock your system with ease, but its a risk that you shoulder. Blame the silicon all day, but if you keep the BP6 within its normal operating limits you will do fine.
Overall it is a flexible system, with plenty of slots, a comprehensive manual and good hardware compatibility. With 3rd party socket adaptors it will work with the Pentium III FPCGAs, a huge upgradability bonus. Get a big case though, cuz its a big board. The memory slots are on the far right so with smaller cases you may only be able to use 1 of the 3 DIMMS as the CD-ROM units may possibly intrude on that space.
I cannot review the UDMA 66 controller onboard as I don't use it, so I'll leave it to others to express their opinions on that.
