| elffy's Full Review: FIC SD 11 Motherboard |
The FIC SD11 was basicly rushed to market. If you read in the newsgroups about it, many, many people did indeed have trouble with this motherboard. Granted, this is very old technology now, and will not be used again (slot A). This interface for the CPU was replaced by the Socket A and it has proven to be very successful as well as stable (considering that AMD is still using it, till we get the revamped CPU's)
The first versions of this board to hit the market were the worst, suffering random reboots and bad UDMA/66 support. I cant say mine was a 'piece of junk' since I got it used and therefore it had had a nice burn in time of about.....2 years....lol. Its especially tricky to find the proper parts for it, 256 meg double sided RAM sticks are expensive and a nice generic video card for the AGP slot. It runs AGPx2 fine. I had to get some pc/133 ram and change the CAS timing in Bios to run 384 meg, but it runs fine. UDMA/66 support was not difficult, either, but dont use a Quantum Bigfoot TX with this motherboard...unless you want UDMA/33 speed.
It easily and happily ran a 80 gig Seagate and a 120 gig Western Digital, no problems at all, but the drives would not run at full speed, obviously, being limited to ATA-66
There are no overclocking features on this board at all. Bios is a rather plain compared to newer boards.
Another note about this board, is that since it was rushed to market, the engineers did not have time to shrink it to its final form, as reflected in the AD11 and other boards by FIC. Longer connections on the board also mean more RFI interferance from other parts, etc....Its a nice board, but a MONSTER!!
