I received the Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 as payment from a friend for some computer work that I did for him. From the start, I was very impressed with this mouse. It has all kinds of pluses and very few minuses in it's favor.
Well, to start off, this mouse just looks cool. It's ergonomically designed to fit in your hand though it's only designed for your right hand. It's got a metallic silver color with dark gray accents. The optical light is a cool red color that accentuates the silver perfectly, but it is very bright in the dark. Also, if you ever turn the mouse over, you must be VERY careful that you don't look at the optic light since it is extremely bright and can cause damage your eyes.
It has two big buttons located on the top front of the mouse. It also has a wheel between those buttons that acts as a third mouse button as well as lets you scroll through web pages. It even has two thumb buttons located on the left side of the mouse with the frontmost button being half the size of the other button. The side buttons are in an easy to use location, but I find them to be very small.
As for the setup, it is a breeze. Just plug the mouse into the USB port or use the included USB to PS/2 adapter. The drivers are very easy to install and I haven't come across any conflicts with other drivers or hardware. The IntelliPoint software that comes with this mouse is easy to install and takes up very little space on your hard drive (about 6 megs). The best thing about this software is that it lets you program all the buttons on your mouse. This allows you to setup your buttons to act as any key on the keyboard. You can even adjust the pointer speed, the number of lines you scroll, the trails, among other traits.
When it comes to the performance, it's the best I've seen. The IntelliEye technology uses a chip with a sensor to capture tiny images of the surface at a rate of 6,000 images per second. This results in a smooth and accurate movement. It's great for applications and even better for games. I use it for a lot of first-person shooters like Unreal Tournament and it made a dramatic increase in the number of kills I get per game. The accuracy of this mouse is uncanny. It even makes exploring the Internet much easier.
With this mouse, you won't need to clean it and it won't get worse with age like models with a mouse ball do. You can even use it on most any surface. I say "most" because surfaces that are reflective in nature require you to put a piece of paper over them before you can use it properly. You can use it on wood, skin, your pants, and carpet. I couldn't get it to work on a glass table or a mirror without the use of paper.
The major drawback is that this can be a very expensive item when compared to other mice. Currently you can find it for around $35-40, but believe me, it's well worth it. It even comes with a lifetime warranty!
All in all, price and minor gripes aside, I still consider it to be a must-have item for your computer. When you start using it, you won't know how you ever survived without it.
