| hobiedoug's Full Review: NAD T762 6.1 Channels Receiver |
I finally decided to take the plunge and buy and A/V receiver to replace my 20 year old stereo gear. I was using an NAD pre-amp feeding two bridged NAD power amps. I've gotten great service out of my NAD's, so I naturally turned to them for my receiver.
Even though I was moving to A/V, I knew I would be spending at least as much time listening to music. Limiting myself to receivers that do both well really shrinks the field and virtually eliminates anything less than $1,000. I read up and/or listened to the usual suspects, including Rotel, Denon, Pioneer Elite and even Sony. Maybe my ears are used to the NAD sound, since I didn't hear anything in the same price range that came close. I bought the T762 from Audio Alternatives in Atlanta, after two visits and a couple of unharassed hours of listening to and watching a variety of music and DVD's. I have been very pleased.
Setup is simple and straightforward, well covered in the instruction manual. Take their advice and use an SPL meter, it made balancing a snap. I soon found myself sucked into the sound. We have just moved into a new house, so I can't compare to the old, but between the T762 and the new digs, I was hearing detail I hadn't heard before. One CD led to another and before I knew it I had spent the entire evening listening. It was just lovely, beautiful sound with no fatigue. Watching movies is just as enjoyable, both sound effects heavy movies and dialog driven movies.
NAD has been beaten up for their remote, quality control and customer service. The new remote seems fine to me - logical and easy to use. Teaching it my DVD and TV codes was easy and fast, the other remotes are now relegated to the drawer. It's to soon to tell about quality control, but I haven't had any problems so far, except for one, which leads us to customer service. When playing some, not all CD's, the unit misses the first fraction of a second of the song, just enough to be annoying. The unit analyzes the bit stream from the DVD player and decides what kind of signal it is. If the CD doesn't send a small amount of silence at the beginning of each cut, the unit has the sound muted as it decides the type of input and doesn't play the music. I contacted NAD by email and they verified my theory. They have just come out with a firmware fix. They've already shipped the eprom chip to my dealer and he'll pop it into the unit as soon as he receives it. Both the dealer and NAD responded quickly to my concern.
I'm extremely pleased with the unit. I had some friends over and they remarked how easy it was to hear the dialog of a movie without having to turn the volume up. It's a real winner.
