earthfire1's Full Review: NetGear WGT624 Wireless Router
Fifty percent of the time, my wireless router functions at most as a fancy paperweight, and at least a waste of electricity.
I bought this product as an intended upgrade from my low-priced Belkin wireless router, which was very reliable but seemed to slow up the internet connection on the desktop computer. The Netgear WGT624 was recommended by a Best Buy employee, had an appealing appearance and seemed to promise a better and faster connection than my Belkin.
There is only one good thing I can say about this router: When it worked, I could get on the internet from my laptop.
There are so many bads, I hope I can remember them all:
First, the user must go through a lengthy setup to install the router. Second, the user must go through this setup any time any ethernet cable is connected or disconnected from the router or the power is turned off the DSL modem or router. Third, the router itself is very very touchy. Sometimes my wireless connection would be lost for seemingly no reason, and could be regained only after I walked over to the router and jiggled the cord. Fourth, sometimes my wireless connection would be lost for no apparent reason whatsoever. I could be online surfing the web, and five minutes later the connection would be lost and could not be fixed with any amount of cord-jiggling.
In the case of the Netgear WGT624 do not be fooled: higher price does not equal higher quality. If you are looking for reliability in a wireless router, continue searching.
