Pros: Widely available
Cons: Permanently shuts down certain networks, endless waits for support, ignorant support techs
The Bottom Line: Dangerous software. Incompetent and frankly unfathomable support technicians.

| stretchcannon's Full Review: Network Associates McAfee VirusScan Home Edition 7... |
I recently (today) installed McAfee Virus Scan (online). I run a standard Win 2000 Pro desktop computer with a standard wireless network.
McAfee immediately disabled my computer's network connection. Uninstalling the software did not fix the problem - my network card refused to communicate with my network, even though all the settings were correct.
Uninstalling and reinstalling all my network software and hardware also did not work.
A lengthy session with a Netgear technician finally got me a workaround solution, but my system remains unable to automatically detect my network settings and connections. Netgear (the maker of the network gear) confirmed that McAfee severely screws up networks in this way.
I waited on hold for TWO HOURS to get a technician online. She was worse than clueless - here only response (I am not kidding) was to say, "I assure you that McAfee works perfectly with Windows 2000". She said it twice.
No attempt to diagnose the problem.
No attempt to even ACKNOWLEDGE that there was a problem. She simply, automatically, denied a problem existed and even could exist. Here last words were, "Well, then you can get a refund". At this point she gave me the toll refund number (by now closed for the day, of course), which was impossible to locate on their website.
My advice, especially for ANYBODY without an MIS degree or running a network, is to avoid McAfee like the plague.
