mrtwigg's Full Review: Nikon Action Ex Extreme (10X50) Binocular
Hey, what kinda bird izzat?
My wife knows because she has had her Nikon Action EX 10 X 50 binocular for the better part of a year now. Im happy to say she is quite fond of them. My wife is an avid birder and when shes not trapsing about the woods searching for some obscure, elusive species of feathered creature shes seated by the picture window in the parlor with these binoculars close at hand. Why does she like them so much ? Lets find out, Oh, honey got a sec.?
Ok, she likes them...
because I gave them to her for her birthday but she also says they have a bit more magnification than others. Most binoculars for casual use are about eight power. The Nikon binoculars are very well made. They have an all metal chassis with a polycarbonate housing for the optics.
I can see clearly now.
The lens and prism system used in this binocular features what Nikon is calling Eco-Glass, which is glass made without the use of arsenic or lead. The lens and prisms each incorporate multi-layered anti-reflective coatings formulated to deliver optimum brightness, high contrast, true color rendition and flare-free viewing in most lighting conditions., as Nikon states on their website.
A ten dollar word.
All openings have been O-ring sealed and the housings are filled with nitrogen so they are waterproof and fogproof. The exterior features Nikons Soft-Touch coating and this is pleasing to touch and is non-slip so you wont drop them. The housings have an ergonomic shape to them: theres a ten dollar word which means they fit nicely in your hands.
Look ma, no glasses !
You can use these without having to remove your eyeglasses. These binoculars also have an adjustable diopter, that is: a click wheel on one side. You sight through this while adjusting the focus (Because no two eyes are alike.) and then use the focus wheel located in between the two housings to focus the binocular.
What you get.
There is a case included but neither my wife nor myself would recommend using it in the field. You do get several lens caps which tend to get knocked off so be sure you fasten them together with string so you wont lose them. There is a nicely woven neck strap with the Nikon logo included but at two and a quarter pounds you are better off getting a shoulder harness to carry these binoculars around and keep the weight off your neck.
What a view !
Field of view is acceptable at 420 feet at 1,000 yards (Or so Nikon says, I didnt measure this.) As long as you can hold them steady the view will not be shaky. What you see is indeed nice and crisp from edge to edge with a really good depth of view so if you are watching something moving towards or away from you it will stay in focus longer. For extended viewing there is a place for a screw in tripod mount (unfortunately not included.) This may have changed due to popular demand. I found these on Amazon.com for about $140.00. If you look around youll be able to get them for a little less , shipping not included.
