I had a 24-120mm Nikon lens and dumped it for this lens. I'm so glad I did. This lens is excellent! At 5.6, 8.0 and 11 it rocks. The images are sharp and clear. The contrast is kicking. I shot a roll of Fuji Superia 400, (I just had it in my bag) and was really impressed by the results.
At 28mm there was a VERY slight barrel in the corners. This was gone at Ԧ.0. I shot a this test roll at 28, 35, 50, 85 and 105. In all of the shots there was excellent sharpness and contrast. With Kodak Portra 100 it would be even sharper! I'm sure with Fuji Velvia it would knock your socks off. Just be sure if you're using a filter that it's top quality and clean.
The lens is well made and focuses very fast on my F5. I think this lens is a real sleeper. It will suit Pro's and amateurs alike. I takes a 62mm filter just like my 24-120 so I could use the same filters.
This lens is still made in Japan and the quality shows.
I wish it came in 2.8 but that's being picky.
If you want a lens to take everywhere this is it. Don't waste your money on the 24-120 or 28-200. Get this and a nice ?.8 180mm lens. It's a great combo.
The first prints I got back I blew up to 8x10 and they are VERY sharp. Just be aware of the VERY slight barrel in the corners at the 28mm end and I mean VERY slight. I didn't see any pincushion anywhere at any stops.
I haven't used the macro, but it is probably not as good as a true macro lens. When I use it, and I will soon. I will update this review.
