It was a real tough call for me too. However, the SNES was at the apex of pixilized gaming which led to a bunch of titles that were just plain fun. I think the Playstation games will fade more in time because the these same games will only look better in time. That being said, both systems have some extremely fun games.

best console... (Reply to this comment)

I'm actually torn between the SNES and the PlayStation as my favorite console of all-time. Both systems have had so many great games I've cherished. The SNES has stuff like Chrono Trigger, Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart, the Donkey Kong Country games, Super Mario RPG, and other favorites. The PlayStation has Resident Evil, the next-gen Final Fantasy games, Wild Arms, Armored Core, and Twisted Metal too. It's tough to choose between the two.

The atari 2600, and SNES was, and still is, my favorite console of all time. Obviously the graphics and audio weren't extremely realistic, but the best games of this era(Especially Zelda: LTtP, and the RPGs) were the most fun games Ever IMO.
Great review,

Yeah, I had the Street Fighter Special Champion Edition for Genesis with the 6 button controller. The only drawback to that game was the graphics were more grainy and the music wasn't as deep as the SNES version. But I hated the shoulder buttons too. I usually mapped them to the medium attacks since I rarely used them.

The Genesis is definitely the better _value_, but if I were trapped on a desert island, I'd choose the SNES library over the Genesis one.

As for selection, I see tons of Genesis games selling really cheap. I almost picked up NHLPA '93 for a buck just a few months ago. The only thing is that I don't have the system anymore, but it might be worth it to get a signature on it. Kjell Samuelsson maybe?

I had the Genesis version of it with the 6-button controller and that game rocked. When I went to my friend's house and played the SNES version, I hated using the fierce attacks with the shoulder buttons. I always mapped them to the face buttons...my friend hated that.

Excellent analysis. I would have given you a MH if I was allowed to.

You're absolutely right about the monetary aspect of Super NES retro gaming. For months I thought about which 16-bit system I should get -- since I'm mainly interested in platforms games right now, I leaned towards the SNES, but prices sent me back. Last month I found a Genesis (squared-shape model) for barely 10$Can, so it took care of my dilemma.

It's not that easy to find worthwhile Genesis carts in the used market around here, because in local stores the SNES-to-Genesis ratio of available games is often in the range of 5-to-1. I still have been able to find a game like Earthworm Jim for only 4$Can, whereas the SNES version usually costs 3-5 times more.
