This is the third wet electric razor Ive owned. I got pretty good use for several years from a Panasonic Linear 8067 but had to reluctantly let it go when the blades become dull and replacement blades were not available.
I had seen some reviews here for the newer Norelco wet models and decided to give one a try. The first wet shaver I had was an early Norelco Advantage and that worked adequately until my son (than around 9 or 10) took it apart and couldnt put it together again. I liked the lotion dispensing system. That unit shaved close enough so I didnt need to use a blade to touch up very often, just for big meetings and occasions.
My own beard is not a particularly heavy one, but it is thick enough in spots so that I need to shave regularly. I need a shaving system that will get me presentable in a business setting, without irritating the sensitive skin on my face, particularly around the lips and skin.
For the record, a wet electric razor can be used in the shower, with shaving cream, soap, water, etc. With dry electric razors, you have to use an alcohol-based pre-shave, like Lectric Shave, to dry the face before shaving. That scheme was incredibly irritating to the sensitive skin on my face. Ive used blades-only in the past. Its closer, but very irritating, even after using aloe vera gel as an aftershave, which Ive used for years.
So, I saw that there were some newer Norelco models out there and I decided to check out Ebay to see what the deals were. I settled on a refurbished Norelco Cool Skin 7775X
Razor. New, at well over $100, I got it on Ebay for around $50, without the trimmer which I did not need.
The shaver had the following described features:
Raised heads create a quick clean
- Rechargeable, Cordless, with Advanced Multi-Function LED Display
- Glide Rings distribute Nivea for Men gel or lotion evenly across the whole shaving head and ensures the gel or lotion stays on the skin longer. As a result, whiskers are softened and irritation reduced.
- Improved Lift and Cut Technology is a dual blade system that shaves hair below skin level.
- Patented Reflex Action adjusts shaving heads to the unique contours of the face.
So hows it work? Well, the lotion dispensing system works fine. I push a button on the razor and the lotion is dispensed on top of the shaver heads. I get about 3 weeks on one lotion pack which fits in the razor. A box of 6 goes on sale at Walgreens for less than $5. Much less irritation. The LEDs are nice, because I can get the razor charged BEFORE it runs out. Thats better because this battery, like many, cannot be charged continuously without lowering the life. So, I cant leave it in the charger. The charge takes around an hour and lasts about 3 weeks. The cleaning system works great. It really does clean easily with a rinse under running water.
Then theres the shave. Honestly, its a disappointment. I can get a comfortable shave from the razor, but it leaves too much stubble on my jaw line and above the lip, necessitating a touch up with a disposable blade razor, every time. I can press a little harder and get a closer shave, but that is more irritation and I still need an occasional touch-up. This does not shave close than either my original Norelco advantage or the Panasonic.
Some other reviewers have commented that the lotion packs are expensive. Not for me, not at my current usage. The problem for me is that using blades AND this razor is more expensive than it ought to be.
Ill keep using it, along with the disposable bladed razors until I run out of the lotion packs. MAYBE Ill try a new set of cutters, although refurbished units are supposed to have new cutters.
That having been said, this was not worth what I paid for it. I suppose its better than using bladed razors exclusively but thats about it.
Thanks for reading. God bless!
