maridian's Full Review: Olympus m:robe MR-100 (5 GB) Digital Media Player
When I decided to get my m:robe it was a tough desicion with all the MP3 players that have emerged on them market, but the m:robe had several features that lured me to it. First off it is by FAR the BEST looking MP3 player out there, it's like the hot sports car of Players that is a great conversation starter and has a style that begs to be called the "nightlife" MP3 player. Second it has more language support than any other player out there, which was huge for me, it even has Russian (as my wife is Russian) not to mention all Asian languages and the major European tounges. The side plug I believe is much better than Ipod's design due to its ability to catch itself if you drop it, because of the L shaped plug, the player will snag on the audio plug and not smash the floor. The Equalizer on the player also has many, many settings and makes this device quite flexible for music enthusiasts. The last bonus of the m:robe is its charger/USB cradle which allows you to simultaneously charge and transfer to this badboy. The only real flaw most say that the m:robe has is its maximum volume output, which is 22 ohms impedance compare to Ipods 32 ohms impedance, so it is a quieter player and on an FM Transmitter it will require you to pump your stereo if you dont have a powerful system, BUT this is fixable with either 1 of 3 solutions. 1) better headphones with noise cancelation, 2) an Audio Amplifier or Amp and 3) future firmware updates from Olympus to increase the outage (the battery life would be less but it would be a fair trade). So overall you get a great player that has sew shortcomings that are fixable, like any sweet device it requires your own personal fine tuning, if you prefer volume, go for better headphones or an amp. If you want mass equalizer choices, you got em. And the design is amazing... oh yeah if Ipod people tell you that the sensors are inefficient for browsing thru Uge music lists, simple tap and hold the bottom of the middle volume control and watch it zoom thru the lists, Quite a bit better than spinning your thumb on a clickwheel for 45 seconds. Oh and Also I worked at CompUSA and I saw over 30 Ipods returned because of random failure, not 1 m:robe was returned defective. And m:robes insurance for 2 years is 3 X cheaper than Applecare ($19.99 vs $59.99)
so get a new one in 2 years (then they'll prolly have the M2) sweet deal.
