Pros: Mature, song variety, free DVD and come on... it's the Foos!
Cons: not karaoke ready (need to listen a few times to know songs); don't give lyrics
The Bottom Line: This CD will get better the more times you hear it, which is a good thing. With a DVD for free as well, you can't go wrong. Pick this up!
elscorcho1's Full Review: One by One by Foo Fighters
Hey everybody. I've been waiting to get this CD for awhile, and when I found out that it came with a DVD for free, it was just icing on the cake. The DVD comes with 15 to 20 minutes worth of stuff, from music videos, songs, pictures, and backstage videos. Good stuff. I'm not the biggest Foo fan, but I have two of their previous CDs. I'll talk a little about each song now:
1. All My Life - This song's the first single off the CD, and sets the tone well for the rest of the record. At 4 minutes and 23 seconds, this is the shortest song on the album. You've probably heard this song on your local rock station. The intro starts off slow and goes throughout the song until it explodes at the end of the song. Great song and opener for the new cd.
2. Low - This song has guitars that sound like buzzing saws. It has like a haunted vibe to it, kinda freaky. But I like this song, especially the chorus that goes "... as low as you go..." where the guitars fit perfectly. This one might take a few listens to fully appreciate it.
3. Have It All - This song starts off very upbeat and catchy. The guitars are just jammin' and it has this great effect (maybe a moog?) that sounds like something from the 80's. It's great. Then it goes to this nice, pretty chorus. (It kind of reminds me of some songs off the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "By the Way" album.) I really like this song, it's fun to listen to.
4. Times Like These - This song reminds me of previous Foo songs. It seems like it would be off "There Is Nothing Left To Lose", only more mature. This song's good to sing along with, but you need to know the lyrics. It doesn't really fit in with the rest of the CD, but I think it's good that they're putting a variety of stuff. The chorus is fun and pretty. This song shows signs of the Fighters maturing.
5. Disenchanted Lullaby - The guitar is great throughout this whole song, starting from the intro which is moderately slow, then the booming chorus. When you think it's going to explode, they slow it down. It reminds me of a roller coaster. Great song; this lullaby rocks.
6. Tired of You - The intro to this song is muted, and you have the feeling of a sudden yell and picking up the speed of the song. Then you realize that they never do that, another sign of maturing. This song kind of has a cowboy style vibe to it. It repeats the same thing over and over, but still works well.
7. Halo - This song is upbeat, displaying Dave Grohl's singing. The chorus is very messy, but you can see they did that on purpose, so it works. Grohl starts yelling, then back to singing. Good song, but I think you might need to listen to this one a few times as well.
8. Lonely as You Are - This song starts off very pretty, Grohl just singing and playing guitar. Then, it gets faster, with the drums and the other guitar and bass joining in. This song is very rockin', but I thought the chorus could be a little bit more powerful for this song. It sounds sloppy, but once again, it works well. The little solo close to the end builds up to Grohl yelling; it's just awesome to hear.
9. Overdrive - This song starts off with a punch and never looks back. It's very upbeat and catchy. It kind of reminds me of previous Foo material. The piano halfway through was a nice touch. Enjoyable to hear.
10. Burn Away - The distorted guitars in the intro is cool, then it slows down. I really like this song. The chorus is one of the best I've heard in awhile. Very fun to sing with and just very neat. One of my favorite songs so far off the album.
11. Come Back - With nearly eight minutes, this song could be a Metallica song. The guitars in the beginning sound like it, but Dave reminds you this the Foos. The chorus is great in this song, and the back up vocals are catchy as well. In between the song, it slows down to just one acoustic guitar, then another acoustic. You feel the pressure building. The drums then come in with an electric guitar. No lyrics at all through this point; the guitar is really good to hear. Then it ignites on fire, building up more and more... stops, then explodes once again. (Reminds me of Weezer's "Only in Dreams", the 8-minute ending song of their first CD.) The song ends with Dave Grohl singing, "I will come back". Then it fades out. It's a great ending song, and even though it's 8-minutes, you crave for more Foo.
That's basically the CD. Right now I'd give it 4 1/2 stars, but I believe it will become better with more listens, so I'll round it up. I highly recommend it to anyone. It has a good variety of songs, gets better with each listen, and comes with a free DVD! What's not to like? Do yourself a favor and pick this CD up now!
