| avaneesh's Full Review: Onkyo DV-CP702 Multi-disc DVD Player |
Preface:
I have the Onkyo DVD changer connected to the Onkyo HT-S780 HTiB. I used a Sony DVD player & a Panasonic DVD changer with the with the Onkyo HTiB. I replaced the DVD changer to Onkyo because I prefer to use all components of the same brand and also for remote compatibility. I had a Sony HTiB earlier with a built in DVD changer.
Out of the Box:
In the box, I received a the (1)DVD player, (2) AV cable, (3) S-Video cable, (4) owners manual and (5) Remote control. The Changer has a dated design, boxy and heavy. The front panel looks more modern, especially with the blue lights. The remote is pretty much straight-forward, it controls all the functions of the changer. The owners manual is pretty comprehensive and includes best practices & troubleshooting. This is a 6 DVD changer, more the better.
Installation/Setup:
Installation was a breeze, simply plug & play. The ports include RCA/Composite, S-Video, Component, Digital Co-axial & Digital Optical outputs. The Component is a must have, but I really wished it included the HDMI out, this is the future & for a $200 changer from Onkyo, that is disappointing. But hey, component is ok for now. After connecting to the receiver, I was able to play DVDs immediately. Nice & easy setup.
Performance/ease of use:
I placed 4 DVDs in the changer. It took me a while to realize the function of the blue light in the middle of the changer, I guess it is to view the disc numbers on the open tray. But the light is not intense enough and youll still have to grope to decipher the numbers. Once the DVDs were in I started testing the features. The power ON cycle is a bit slow compared to the Panasonic changer. Once it is powered on, it grabbed the first DVD & remained in the stop mode, this is good, because the Panasonic would start playing the disc immediately and I missed the trailers. DVDs play really god on this one. The quality seems to be better than the Panasonic for sure but when compared to the Sony, I did not see much difference. Changing DVDs is a bit noisy, but better than the Panasonic changer. The cool part of this changer is you can open the disc tray while a DVD is playing, so you can add/remove disks while one disk is being played. Nice feature. It plays all formats currently available - DVD, DVD-Video, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3, VCD, Audio CD. I did not have any problem playing my personal collection of burnt audio CD collection. I really liked the picture quality and the fact that it is a 6 DVD changer
Pros:
1. Picture Quality
2. Build Quality
3. Uncluttered, neat & cool front panel
Cons:
1. Slow power ON cycle
2. Noise level higher than expected from Onkyo & a $200 changer
3. No HDMI/DVI outputs
Overall, it is a fantastic DVD changer, but if you specifically need the HDMI/DVI outs, look elsewhere. But with Component, the picture quality is outstanding.
