Pros: Great sound, learning remote with macros, great features for price.
Cons: Poor arrangement of buttons on remote, can't switch components with only one button.
The Bottom Line: Great receiver for the price (especially now, got mine last year). Does everything. Learning remote with macros rule. Could be a better arrangement of buttons and simpler switching of components.

| spielmanmj's Full Review: Onkyo TX-SR601 6.1 Channels Receiver |
I'm not going to write an extensive review but since I thoroughly utilized all manner of review websites, I wanted to give something (albeit late) back to help others in their search for a receiver.
I'm just going to point out a few of the pros and cons of the Onkyo TX-SR601. I'm not a serious audiophile so I don't much about sound and the fancier functions of receivers these days. The sound out of this thing is great. I echo what the previous reviewer said about clean, crisp sound. I'm using some lower end Polk surround speakers and even though I don't have great range the sound and music out of the system has drawn many compliments from friends.
My favorite feature is the learning remote, which at the time was hard to find in this price range. I have actually got a DVD player, VCR and TV all controlled by one remote and I don't think adding components will change that. The macro functions are the best features but there are only 2 of them, wish I had a dozen. On the bad side, switching is fairly straight forward for me (unfortunately it takes several button switches to go from one thing to another) but I don't think it would pass the Grandma test yet. I think most receivers out there operate the same way by having to switch to Video 1 or 2 on the TV then get the sound on by hitting the appropriate button on the receiver remote and then hitting the correct button to control the DVD. Not smart. ONE BUTTON receiver manufacturers! Also the number buttons should be set higher than the bottom of the remote and the center directional pad is a little tough to use.
I think this system is basic enough for non-audiophiles to understand but complex enough to get the use of any number of higher end features. I have been extremely happy with it and have had no problems at all. The only thing I wish it did was component switching with one button.
