| roosthui's Full Review: Sony CLIE® PEG-T665C Handheld |
As I was walking into the store for another purchase curiosity got the best of me. Drifting off course and deaking away from my company I began to make my way to the electronics booth. Only 3 monthes ago I got an M500, which I was thouroughly pleased with and convinced I recieved a good deal; all things considered. Now I am wondering if what I could have got if I held off just a bit longer.
Not surprisingly, but to my disappointment, the laws of technology prevailed. Like all electronics as soon as I had bought my m500 it had dropped in price and outdone in features by other models. Although I shouldn't be whining because I didn't get hurt and the m500 is still a great machine, but I was a little disappointed.
Crusing up and down the show line flicking buttons and turning the odd wheel Sony's new model CLIE PEG-T665C stole my attention. At first glance it was attractive, especially with the colour (which the m500 doesn't have), and ultra slim design. It wasn't short on features list either, while it was on the price. Perfect I thought, just 3 monthes too late. Well, now onto the actuall product review from what I could soak up...
Ultra Slim Design
Definitley the most attractive feature by itself, the 665 can easily fit into your coat pocket, or even wallet. The body is roughly 1/5" in width including the handheld and the mp3 addition. Covering the unit is a special full allinium casing for durability and "too die for" looks. The ultra slim design is probably the most attractive feature in the struggle between Palm OS models or Pocket PC.
The Palm Operating System
The 665 comes standard with the Palm 4.1 Operating System. Temporarely this is the most recent eddition, however later this year Palm 5.0 will be released, and this model will not even be compatible. Along with the Palm operating system is the standard pack: Datebook, Address Book, To Do list, Notepad, and Memopad. Included with the CD are a number of 3rd party applications that help you with pretty much every part of your life from fun and games to business. If you were to load every single application included you would run out of memory! No longer are the days of searching for programs. And even still if you need more for any specialized reason you can visit:

Built in MP3 Player
All I can say is Cool! Sony provides you with everything you need except your favourite music. They give you the software for the handheld, sell the memory sticks for storing all your favourite songs, and even supply you with headphones, and there is a volume controll too! In case you're on a long trip and still need to preserve batteries there is even a nifty little feature that allows you to turn off the screen whille the music rocks on!
It couldn't be simpler to use. You can add all your songs to the handheld in a HotSync process in just a few seconds. The plug for your headphones is built right into the left side of the unit so that it's easy to use, yet still descrete.
Hi-Resolution Colour Screen
The 665 features an amazing Hi-Res screen which all images and programs sharper than before. "Regular" (quite honestly "older") models only featured a 160x160 pixel screen. The 665 has a 320x320 pixel screen so that in particular media can be shown better.
Colour is a completely new ball game compared to black and white. Certainly not nessassary for people using their palms as address books, but then neither are the palms; buy an address book!!! Colour is really really cool, especially for images on Photosuit and playing the more and more common colour games. The backlight is also great for letting you see the screen when natural light isn't in adbundance. It fully uluminates the screen, and voila the suns out again!
Extra Features
Jog Dial
Exclusive to Sony PDAs is the jog dial system. I specifically said Sony PDAs because the jog dial system is also in large use on Roger's Blackberries and other wireless PDAs. It's great though it allows you to quickly access you information without tying up your hands with the stylus.
Remote control
The 665 can be used to remotely control audio and video products using its infrared port and CLIE Remote Commander software. The IR can reach AV products up to 15 feet away. This alright for your TV/VCR/DVD to impress your friends, but honestly with my trials its 20x more annoying than the standard remote. Maybe in a pinch.
Sound Effects
Sound effects can replace boring system sounds, personalized audio tunes will alert you of your important appointments. Built in speaker also provides great sound effects with your games!
In Conclusion...
Sony's 665 Palm model is a great combination of features, style and price. Definitely a great buy!
