| mikecohen's Full Review: Panasonic DMR-T3040 (40 GB) DVD Recorder |
The Panasonic DMT-T3040 is a good introduction to digtal video for those who have not really mastered the art of NLE (non-linear) editing.
And while DVD camera's are cute- tape is still going to be with us for a long while to come- so storage and backing up on a format like DVD is important.
It give a user a simple system of being able to store video in a high quality format but does not only do that.
It can make some basic edits of what is stored on its hard drive.
If you have a DVcam- be it big or small; it's IEEE-1394 DV Input Terminal for digital transfers from DV camcorders and recorders makes work easier- hook it up- push a button and you start making sure tape snaps become a thing of the past.
The Advantage to those who use small DV tapes on long field coverage makes this a great system for backup to the tapes- tapes- which no mater how you care for them it seems always gets looped, jumped, cut or worse broken.
Now while there are larger internal 40 GB Hard Drive, dont go for the Panasonic line of "up to 52 hours storage in EP mode" -sadly this is worse than low end VHS SP quality- not pro level- stick to- the XL setting of 8.5 hours on highest quality XP mode.
DVD's are cheap- and I cant think of why you would not want to transfer what you had onto a disc instead of keeping it on hard drive forever anyway.
Corporate Users will like the Product it can also be used to edit insurance claim videos and it you can get it to work on its somewhat- sci-tech remote scene select - then you can make decent presentations.
Production materail to easy Ship w/ Fedex or UPS delivery of a presentation that you know will play - after editing it on a computer. Not always the case with DVD burners.
The deck works.
Other Features:
1. Supports playback of CD, Video CD, CD-R/RW formats
Most decks do this anyway- but its a little shaky on VCD mode- perhaps the source content but not a strength.
2. It's PC Card slot for display of images from SD Memory equipped Digital Stills Camera- is a plus- now with an interlink to a PC or Laptop via its Ieee1394 and you are ready to start making movies.
Now untill somebody could come up with a NLE, Abobe for DVD recorders to allow better levels of editing and sticking to brand names this unit has worked and continues to work well for me.
