There are numerous features that this phone that were must haves when I originally bought it. One of them was the ability to have a base station that was not battery dependent so that I could always be certain that in an emergency I would be able to make a call. This requirement turned out to be rather prescient on my part because within about 6 weeks the NiCd battery within the handset was completely shot and would not hold a charge long enough to even dial a call. Within about 10 seconds of pressing the talk button the handset would switch itself off. How Panasonic would even sell such a unit is completely beyond me. I know that NiCd technology does work if the product is engineered correctly, because I also have an older Sony cordless phone and the NiCd battery in the Sony lasted several years and could go a week or more between charges. Note, I did everything the manual stated including initially charging the battery for 15 hours before the first use. I in no way abused the battery since I was fully aware of the memory effect that results in NiCd batteries due to crystallization of the electrolyte. I even complained to Panasonic, and was sent a "new" battery free of charge. The replacement battery only lasted about 4 weeks however before it got to the point where it was impossible to even make a call. On the annoying side, the remote handset doesn't display the date and time on the LCD display. Energizer has an ER-P511 NiMH battery, but since it is impossible to buy in Canada (or at least it seems that way) I have no way of knowing whether that battery works acceptably when used with the KX-TGA270CS handset.
