I finally made the jump to mini DV after holding on to my Hi-8 machine for way too long. A friend of mine has this model and highly recommended it. I looked at the more expensive versions of the Panasonic but decided I didn't need all the features.
This is a great little camcorder. Very easy to use. The 3 CCDs make a HUGE difference in terms of the picture quality. If there's one area you should not skimp it's in this area. If you consider you will likely record family type imagery that can never be replaced you should try to get the best possible quality for the least amount of money. Frankly, you should never get anything less than a 3 CCD machine because of the huge differential in image quality.
Clearly, this is not a perfect machine, but then again I'm not a professional video guy so am OK with that. One really quirky design error is that to display the date and/or time you have to go through a complex selection of menu choices. In all other camcorders I've owned you would simply push a button, plus you could do this while recording. This is not possible on this machine which I think is incredibly boneheaded and stupid. Really a shame because everything else works really well.
