Pros: Long-lasting and priced within reason. Lots of compliments.
Cons: Overpowering at first. Long-lasting- if you don't like the scent, it's hard to remove.
The Bottom Line: I love it, but Passion is not for everyone. No perfume smells exactly the same on different people, so try out a tester bottle before purchasing.
auntnono's Full Review: Passion by Elizabeth Taylor
In this day and age, we more or less take it for granted that every 2-bit actor/actress, singer, athlete, model or tabloid headliner is going to introduce a perfume line.
The fad for celebrity scents actually had its heydey in the 1980s. Both Joan Collins and Linda Evans had scents named in honor of nighttime soap "Dynasty". These fragrances faded away when the show was cancelled. Andrew Shore of Shearson Lehman summed it up in a 1989 quote: "The celebrity can sell the first bottle, but the scent has to sell the second." Elizabeth Taylor has both the celebrity and the scent.
Dame Elizabeth started her fragrance line in 1987 with the introduction of Passion. According to the New York Times, Passion was one of the top five selling perfumes of that year, selling $35 million in its first four months. Today, it is still a top seller.
I was introduced to Passion in 1988 by an overzealous salesclerk, who squirted me all over as I exited an escalator. I thought it was the most disgusting scent I have ever smelled and really laid into her for not asking permission to spray me. For all she knew, I had a fragrance allergy. As I stated, I thought the scent was disgusting and hoped it wouldn't make me ill. My poor shopping companion not only had to smell me, but listen to my mouth as well. But a funny thing happened. Only fifteen minutes later the scent wasn't as nasty. Within 30 minutes it didn't bother me at all. One hour later, I was exclaiming over how wonderful I thought Passion was. My companion agreed. People in the mall stopped to ask me what scent I was wearing! Who woulda thunk???? It's now one of my favorite fragrances. My best friend calls it my "signature" scent.
The fragrance is described as a blend of jasmine, woods, vanilla, moss and floral. It is recommended as an evening scent, but I wear it both day and night. I find it more of a woodsy scent than floral. I cant even tell the jasmine is there. I can attest to the longevity with the scent becoming more pleasing as it fades. I have been complimented as much as 6 hours after spraying. To help the scent last longer, consider layering with Passion body lotion and dusting powder.
Packaged in a deep violet bottle reminiscent of Ms. Taylor's striking eyes, the scent is available in Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum and parfum (perfume), body lotion, dusting powder and soap. There is also a men's cologne. What is the difference? Eau de Toilette (EDT) is an alcohol/water based perfume solution containing 3 to 8 % perfume compound. Eau de Parfum (EDP) contains 10 to 15% perfume compound. Parfum (or perfume) is the most highly concentrated form of fragrance, containing between 20 - 50% perfume compound. Parfum is the strongest and longest lasting. It also commands the highest price. I have never seen this scent in a cologne version. The EDT is usually in a spray bottle with sizes ranging from .5 to 2.5 fl oz.. Prices on the net range from $9 to $36. I have found the EDP in a 1.5 fl. oz. spray bottle at Kohls for $40 and as part of a gift set. The parfum comes in mini bottles (.4 oz) and retails as high as $80.00. Fragrance is widely available at brick and mortar department and drug stores. The best prices are usually found online but Walgreens occasionally has a sale too good to pass up.
This is not a scent I would recommend for everyone. If you prefer light floral scents, this is not for you. It goes on strong and while it does fade, I would never describe it as light. Once on, it is hard to remove short of a complete shower. I usually spray at least 1 hour before entertaining or going out and allow the scent to fade. No perfume smells exactly the same on different people, so try out a tester bottle before purchasing.
