Cons: Young reposado, could have more aromas and more balance.
The Bottom Line: It is a young reposado probably no more than 4 months, it has the strong cooked agave in it with mild vanilla and caramel which take much of the bite.
If you are one who thinks tequila is too peppery for your palate you owe it to yourself to try some real sipping tequila.
I first tried Patron many years ago, while it was one of the only premium tequilas available in America and probably one of the best choices. After a few trips to Mexico I found out that it is tequila that is only sold to the Gringos, I looked for it every where and not one single person in Mexico knew what I was talking about. Later I found out that it was made in a very well known distillery in a place called Los Altos for an American company and was exclusively marketed here (USA).
Patron has all of the punch of distilled spirits with none of the biting roughness associated with traditional tequila that people will mix or shoot and have salt and lime afterwords as not to taste it. This may be because Patron is made by a very traditional distillery by people who have been making tequila for a long time (Siete Leguas), it is a 100% blue agave tequilana weber and not a mixto. Traditional stone ovens are used for this tequila, fermented and then double distilled. It is a young reposado probably no more than 4 months, it has the strong cooked agave in it with mild vanilla and caramel which take much of the bite. It is not a very complex spirit with many different aromas but it is good tequila that confirms what you are looking for in taste. The color is very bright copper, again leting us know it is a good young reposado.
The presentation is nice in a artisan bottle with a wood top although the box itself is nothing to brag about.
You can almost get it anyplace it is so well distributed, the price for a young reposado 100% blue agave is a little high but taking in consideration the popularity of Patron it is probably at the correct marketing price.
Enjoy it over ice, at room temperature, straight, or in a margarita, whatever suits your fancy. Although many like to make mixed drinks, Patron really lends itself to straight sipping, just like fine single malt. You can then truly appreciate the craftsmanship and care that goes into this fine tequila. Also available in blanco and anejo.
