| chancellrmarto's Full Review: Philips 3-Disc Changer FW320C Cassette/CD Boombox |
I bought this stereo from Wal-Mart to serve as my only stereo in my bachelors' apartment. I would say that it has exceeded my expectations and that if I had it to do over again, I would buy it again.
For a compact system, it has very good sound quality. It has four preset sound types to choose from, those being 'Optimal', 'Jazz', 'Rock', and 'Techno'. There is also a 'DBB' option (also known as Dynamic Bass Boost) that can be enabled or disabled with each of the preset sound configurations. Unfortunately, it does not let you fine-tune your sound beyond the four presets configurations and the DBB option, though I've found that the preloaded configurations serve quite well.
The three disc CD changer works very well, with no skips or distortions. The system allows you to load or unload two of the three discs while playing a third without interruption. You can program what tracks you want to play in whatever order you desire, but your program cannot include tracks from multiple discs unfortunately. There is a 'repeat' option to repeat one track over and over, but the repeat option will not repeat a complete program or an entire disc. The changer also has a 'shuffle' option, in which the system will randomly play tracks from all loaded discs, until it has played each track of all the loaded discs. It does not repeat a track it has already played in shuffle mode.
The AM/FM tuner works very well, picking up both local and distant stations, provided that the antenna (packed with the system) is installed. The dual-tape decks also work very well.
The system has a clock that you can set so that you can wake up to music, which is a nice touch. It also has a mini headphones jack which fits most common headphones on the market today, and left and right RCA audio inputs, which you can use with any item that has audio outputs, such as a record player or VCR. It does not, curiously, have either a built in microphone or a connector for one.
