| vandalz's Full Review: Philips 46PP9302 46 in. TV |
“Let’s make things better”. This is the saying that Philips Electronics places on all of their ads, but do they make things better or not? Philips Electronics have been around for a while, and so it comes as no surprise that they do have some great products on the market.
One such product is the 46PP9302 or the 46” Digital Widescreen HDTV Monitor. I enjoy a good movie as much as most everyone else does, but why buy a big Widescreen TV when you can just go out to the movies and watch it with superb picture and sound. Because that movie that you want to watch doesn’t stay in the movie theaters for too long, and so you need something that will make it just as enjoyable as being at the cinema.
That is where one of the most crucial parts of any movie experience comes into play, the Monitor! Without a monitor you would not see anything that was happening, but you would hear it if you had speakers hooked up to the signal. Not too enjoyable, so what would you want in a monitor?
Well, after being in the retail business for quite some time, and having many different customers and objections, I have come up with some answers for some of the questions. Some of the questions are very rudimental while others are very intricate.
Question 1: How big is too big? This is a very relative question that depends on where you are putting the TV. Most people when buying are looking to put the TV in their living rooms. Living rooms vary in size and therefore the first response to this question is that it depends on where you are putting the TV. If you are in a small confined room a 36” TV may be what you need, but if you are in a large room a 61” TV may be what you need. A great compromise in size would have to be the 46PP9302.
This unit measures in at 23.5 x 44.5 x 52.6” (D x W x H). As you can see this is not a huge TV. It only takes two ( 2 ) feet of space from the front of the monitor to the back which makes it easy to locate in your home or office. It does stand 4.6” higher than four ( 4 ) feet, but this is to be expected when it is sitting on top of a center channel speaker that adds an extra dimension of sound to the movie or show that you are watching. The speakers are only powered by 20 watts RMS, but you don’t need a great deal of power when you have other speakers that you are using in a complete Home Theater System.
Question 2: What about Picture Quality? Picture quality is a must, and this model is not a slouch when it comes down to quality. Some of the features that add to the quality of the picture is the Multipoint Digital Convergence, the Active Control, Eye Fidelity, and APAC. Each of the features is important and does a great part in adding to a great movie experience that you can truly enjoy and appreciate. I will discuss each and explain what each does, if you already know about these features you can skip this section if you like. The first is Multipoint Digital Convergence. This feature is used with curved CRT faceplates and short focal length lenses. Philips has implemented a 35-point convergence into this particular model that adds a great deal of digital accuracy for unparalleled convergence of the reds, greens, and blues of the system that virtually eliminated any colored haloes.
Active Control isn’t anything super fancy, but it sure does help you out. It has the ability to continually analyze the picture on the monitor and control the Digital Noise and the Sharpness of the system, and it will automatically offer the best picture setting based on its calculations.
Eye Fidelity is a selectable feature that allows the user of the monitor to select between the Progressive Scan and Interlaced Scan. Progressive Scanning doubles the number of visible picture lines by displaying all of the lines at one time which primarily takes away the dreaded line flicker. Interlaced Scanning provides a double vertical display of Progressive Scanning, which reduces motion artifacts, and it also helps to smooth out some or most of the jagged lines that are found on curved screens.
APAC, another acronym for Automatic Phosphor Aging Compensation or better described as a “Screen Saver”. Anyone who understands burnout can agree with me here. When a screen has a burned image it won’t go away, and Philips doesn’t want this to happen to this monitor, so they have developed APAC. This feature moves the screen in very small increments that are not noticeable to us, but only to the monitor, this makes for the screen to be constantly changing and therefore burnout is avoided. Whew!
Question 3: What about Inputs/Outputs? Everyone keeps asking me this question, and it becomes quite tedious sometimes. Most people know that the TV is going to have COAX, and RCA Inputs, and that is all they ask about, but what they don’t normally know is that they have a few more options. These options include S-Video, HDTV, Digital Optical, and HDTV Component. This TV monitor has every one of these inputs except for Digital Optical. As for outputs, it doesn’t lack here either. It has one S-Video output, two RCA Video Outputs, and two Left/Right Audio RCA outputs. Perfect for most anyone just adding a monitor to their system.
Generally, after answering these main questions, the person is interested in seeing the TV in action, and that is where I throw in my favorite movie Independence Day. The action that happens throughout the movie is superb and amazing. The one thing that I tell my customers is that this is a semi-direct view TV. What that means is that if you are at almost perfect eye-level with the monitor, then the picture is the clearest and brightest, but if you move at an angle, the picture is still clear but not as bright. This is truly the only downside that I have found this monitor to have.
Philps has been around for quite some time now, and understand what it takes to make quality components. This television is equipped with everything that you would need to enjoy movies at the cinematic level, and also regular airing shows. Either way, you should truly give this TV a try.
