| jljohnston's Full Review: Philips AJ3980 Clock Radio |
As a former Philips employee, I've been pretty loyal to their products. But things like clock radios have to be easy to use and produce at least decent sound.
This model is now out of production I believe, and when I tried a more recent model it did not have the same tuner; only five presets and not as sensitive or selective as the one in the the AJ3980 model.
The quality of the radio is in it's superb tuner. Given the fact that it has only two tiny speakers facing outboard from either side of a cube shape, it also sounds good. There is some obvious "acoustic manipulation" in the circuitry of the amplifier which disappears when the volume level is increased over the 25 level indicator.
The clock display is very large (and kind of strange with it's LCD segments) but the orange backlighting prevents it from being very obtrusive and is always easy to read.. The alarms are a little confusing but the touch screen display/control makes it quick and simple. Mechanical (maybe) buttons on either side of the display will control the different alarm settings.
While I have previously praised a more expensive Sony clock radio, this one-- after years of use-- is what occupies my bedside table.
