| gaussian's Full Review: Philips DVD-750 DVD Player |
As an early adopter I purchased Philips DVDR-985 only to suffer the repeated failures that product was so noted for. It is now a $900 door stop. Believing that Philips had the time and skills to overcome this edsel of the DVDR industry, and following some early reports, I bought the DVDR75. This product seems much more forgiving than the finicky 985 but unfortunately for the thousands of us that bought this product, it too is just not a durable product.
I take extreme care of the unit but am a heavy user. I only use quality discs and provide adequate cooling of the unit when in use. It would appear that as the unit is used or ages it gradually becomes incapable of recording on DVD+R media. Some have reported that they were able to record on cheap DVD+R media while others report that it refuses to recognize any DVD+R media for recording. I have personally read dozens of reports regarding this problem with the DVDR-75 and suspect it is simply a matter of time before many others will experience this degradation.
Firmware updates do not correct this condition. Philips is characteristically silent about generic issues such as this.
New out of the box this unit performs well. The Video and audio quality is good. The unit has less inputs and outputs than the 985 had and therefore is less flexible in setting up your system. The progressive scan is not nearly as good as the 985 or most current DVD players. For me this is not an issue; progressive scan is used only on playback and does not degrade the recording functionality or quality.
If you read product review from authors who are light to moderate users or who are reporting after only a brief exposure to this product you will not get a meaningful evaluation on durability. If you plan to use this extensively or keep this product for several years try another product or manufacturer; this is not for you. As for me two failed Philips products will send me to another vendor for my next recorder.
