Pros: Clear picture, clear sound, many features (zoom, jog pause, etc)
Cons: Won't play many newer dvds.
The Bottom Line: Don't waste your money. It won't play the new movies, and Philips will not make it right.

| hansolo30's Full Review: Philips DVD850 DVD Player |
Normally, Philips Magnavox is a good brand, but this has convinced me otherwise. I bought mine brand new and it was great for about two years. Then I bought the first Superman movie, and it was not so super. This player refused to take it. I tried everything in my power to get it to play. I tried THREE different copies of this movie to no avail. I resigned myself that it wasn't going to play and got on with my life. Then, I bought American Werewolf in London. It too would not play. Not only that, it would not come off the "loading" phase. I had to unplug the player and plug it back in just to eject the disc. By this time I've already decided I've got a bum player. Then, about a month ago on Christmas day, I received Shrek and Jurassic Park III as gifts. Guess what? Neither would play in my player. There are two different discs to Shrek and neither one of those would play. I contacted Philips Magnavox, and the best they could do for me was to say that they would send me a brand new player (EXACTLY LIKE THE ONE I ALREADY HAVE) for a "Small" fee of $125. Even then, the customer service dude could not give me a guarantee that it would work. That is a complete ripoff. I paid almost 500 bucks for this player and in about 2 and a half years, it's already pretty much worthless. I can't go out and rent or buy movies because I NEVER KNOW IF THEY WILL PLAY. Take my advice and steer clear of Philips Magnavox from now on.
