| markh30's Full Review: Philips DVD850 DVD Player |
I purchased my Philips/Magnavox 850AT DVD player in July of 1999. I was really exicted with this purchase being it was my first DVD player. Once I set it up and viewed my first movie, I was very impressed with the picture and sound qualities. Both were surpassed by nothing else. However, the setup and use of the remote control left a lot to be desired. To this day, I'm still trying to figure out what all the buttons are for.
Anyway, about two months ago, I decided to sit down one night and watch the movie 'Blade'. I was about 2/3 of the way into the movie when the picture started to freeze. After playing around with all the buttons on the remote, the picture slowly started to move again, but with squares all over the picture. I then felt uneasy about the DVD player. So, I placed a different movie in the player. I was able to watch that movie in it's entirety.
The next day I went on the Internet to investigate why the DVD player did this. Come to my surprise, the Philips/Magnavox 850AT has known issues too numerous to mention. It all narrows down to the fact that this type of DVD player should not be purchased (in my opinion). Philips/Magnavox is aware of all the known issues, but attempts to contact them on those issues is futile. I sent them numerous emails (via their website), but they went unreplied. I then called their '800' number for customer support. The woman at the other end stated that she cannot help me but transferred me to the support line. I got someone's voicemail. I then left a message, but got no return phone call.
So, it is in my best opinion to stay away from this model DVD player.
