DVDs aren't just for watching movies anymore. Make your own movies. Record TV shows and delete commercials. Share thousands of pictures with friends and family, or create an archive. Or just pop in a regular DVD movie and enjoy! All with the Philips DVDR77.
What It Does
Aside from the obvious - allowing you to watch DVDs the Philips DVDR77 has a built in DVD recorder. This allows you to record, edit, and save homemade DVDs. You can create a DVD using Philips i.LINK digital connection technology. This allows for quick transfer of data and allows you to transfer information on old video tapes and your digital camcorder straight to DVD.

DVDR77
The DVDR77 is a fairly simple machine to use. It is well equipped so it should satisfy most buyers. The DVDR77 features a PCMCIA media slot, progressive scan, and variable bit rate recording. The progressive scan means you'll get great quality images on your TV since it increases resolution. To accomodate other components the DVDR77 has a large array of inputs/outputs. These include component video input, s-video and composite inputs. There are inputs found on the front and back of the DVDR77. A great feature is the i.Link input. This allows you to directly record data from digital camcorders or load pictures from digital cameras.
When recording you can create chapter markers so you don't have to fast forward or rewind to find what you want to watch. Other features include into scan, time search, and multiple speed fast forward and reverse. There are also three slow motion speeds and a zoom feature! The DVDR77 uses 24-bit DAC for high-quality sound reproduction. Dolby Digital allows great sounding audio. You can use standard audio CDs as well as CD-R and CD-RW discs, MP3 files are playable on the DVDR77 too. The recording functions of this machine is fairly simple to use. The index picture screen is like a visual table of contents. Similar to Scene Selection on regular movie DVDs you get at Blockbuster, for example. This is a multi-lingual machine (English, Spanish, French). Other details are: time and date download, five-hour backup clock and calander and a screen saver.
Features:
Recording Times - Variable Bit Rate recording gives you a choice of 6 recording modes: HQ 1hr, SP 2hrs, SP+ 2.5 hrs, LP 3hrs, EP 4hrs, and EP+ 6hrs. The differences are in the quality of the recording. In most cases you'll be ok with EP or EP+.
Progressive Scan - Progressive scan increases resolution of images which, obviously, creates a sharper image. It is a standard feature on all quality DVD players.
i.LINK Digital Video Input - Keep all your home videos in high quality digital format. i.LINK Digital Video input, also known as IEEE 1394 and FireWire, allows you to connect DV, D8 camcorder, and computers to copy your digital videos in their original digital picture quality.
PCMCIA Media Slot - PCMCIA slot lets you directly load pictures from Compact Flash, Memory Stick, SD Card, Smart Media, and Micro Drive to the DVD burner. It's a cool feature, a lot of desktop and laptop computers feature them now.
Digital Photo Manager - The media slot lets you share and record your pictures with others. Use this feature to manage those photos.
Scene Selection - Lets you remove commercials or edit parts out of your home videos.
Index Picture Screen - You'll always know what's on your DVDs with this feature. The Index Picture Screen is just like a DVD menu on a regular DVD movie created on every DVD+RW/+R disc. It lets you do scene selection.
Component Video Input - This is a high-quality connection to hook up the DVDR77 and high-quality TVs. Component video cables are expensive.
Dolby Digital - Digital audio encoding technology that is used on all regular DVD movie discs.

Final Say
The Philips DVDR77 is a good DVD recorder/player. A little too pricey to be a likely present under the Christmas tree, but certainly a good update to your home entertainment system. The owners manual is pretty easy to understand and follow. If you've ever used a DVD recorder before you may not even need to read it. The functions are simple. The recording speed is decent.
