Philips announces the DVDR80! Your home DVD recorder! The Philips DVDR80 DVD recorder is the next generation DVD recorder manufactured by Philips. Philips produced the older DVDR985 and it is a decent machine but if you're looking for newer technology the DVDR80 is the way to go.
What It Does:
Aside from the obvious - allowing you to watch DVDs the Philips DVDR80 has a built in DVD recorder. This allows you to record, edit, and save homemade DVDs. You can create a DVD using Philips i.LINK digital connection technology. This allows for quick transfer of data and allows you to transfer information on old video tapes and your digital camcorder straight to DVD.

How It Works:
The DVDR80 features the Variable Bit Rate (VBR) recording system. This allows the DVDR80 to keep the picture quality as high as, or even improve the quality of, the original source. VBR enables a DVD recorder to monitor the incoming signal and automatically dedicate more resources to scenes that need it.
The Philips DVDR80 DVD recorder uses a motion-compensated noise filter to reduce noise in recordings from analog broadcasts and other sources such as old videotapes. The DVDR80 features an Electronic Programming Guide (EPG) and a Progressive Scan output with a sophisticated Motion Adaptive System that corrects visual artifacts and optimizes the video image, resulting in sharp picture performance.
Design:
You won't need to hide this in you entertainment center! The DVDR80 features a classy looking silver face and mirrored plastic accents. The buttons are a pair of circular dials. The remote control isn't that great and could be difficult for older users to operate. Probably my favorite feature is the ability to record a show once, daily or every time it comes on. You can burn on both DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs and view them in any regular DVD player. The resolution is extremely high and the DVDR80 does a great job with converted VHS tapes.
Overall:
Though the initial cost is a bit high, I think it is worth it over the long run. You'll enjoy the style, quality and functionality of the DVDR80. Philips customer service could use an overhaul - they're rude and not very helpful. Other than that you shouldn't have any problems. I recommend it if you have the spare dough. The majority of users will love it, super techies will probably need something else.
